Damon Edmunds

Upon completion of his Degree, Damon returned to Streaky Bay to manage the family’s abalone fishing business, which he is now 25% owner of. This involves diving for Greenlip and Blacklip abalone on the West Coast of South Australia.

The family’s license allows them to catch 24 tonne per annum. Damon is also involved in the processing and marketing of their product through their factory “Streaky Bay Marine Products Pty Ltd ”. Damon also has an interest in the scallop industry.

He leases a license to dive for scallops throughout South Australian waters. Damon served as a councillor on the Streaky Bay District Council from 2002-2003. Through this he has joined a number of sub-committees which are relevant to the fishing/aquaculture industries.

This reflects his enthusiasm for the community and why he is so eager to see this aquaculture venture succeed as it will provide a much needed boost to employment and the local economy.

Dion manages the family abalone diving business which includes two wild catch abalone licences. The family abalone business has been operating for the past 30 years, commercially harvesting 24 tonne p.a. of wild abalone from the SA Wild Abalone Fishery (Western Zone).

Dion also has a management role in Streaky Bay Marine Products Pty Ltd, which processes and markets 120 tonne of abalone per annum (market value of $5m pa) through contacts overseas and locally with Dover Fisheries.

This enables Dion to be continually up to date with market trends and developments within the Asia region (specifically China, Taiwan, Japan and Singapore).

Over the past 10 years, Dion has regularly travelled to Asia and is well aware of the demand for the product and the different techniques used in preparing, marketing and eating of abalone.

Paul was born and raised in Streaky Bay, spending his youth on a farming property where he developed his practical hands on work knowledge and ethic. Paul completed his secondary education in Adelaide at Unley High School, successfully passing all PES subjects at Year 12 level. After completing Year 12, Paul was offered a position in a Chartered Accounting Practice which he took up. While working full time, Paul also completed his accounting studies by correspondence.

After 10 years with the Accounting/Financial Planning Firm working predominantly in the areas of Audit, Business Review, Corporate Structuring and Taxation, Paul has gained invaluable knowledge in successful business operation.

Paul left the accounting practice to join his family in their operation as Managers (14 years) of a large and popular seaside Caravan Park. He spent the last three years as Resident Manager of this operation whilst also being a partner in the scallop fishing business and being involved from the outset in the research and subsequent formation of the abalone farm concept.

For the past five years Paul has overseen the development of the Abalone Farm from it’s infancy to the stage where the project is now ready to undertake a significant expansion to realise the commercial potential of the business.

Paul understands and appreciates the intricate planning and budgeting required for successful businesses and the positive flow on effects increased business activity brings for this region.
